Julio Cese Figueroa - Awardee 1988

Julio Cese Figueroa

Interview

PPFTA: How many years have you been training Paso Finos?
Julio: I have been training Paso Fino horses for about 50 years.

PPFTA: Are there any other breeds that you have worked with?
Julio: Yes, I have worked with other breeds.

PPFTA: Which ones?
Julio: I have worked with Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Hunter-Jumpers, and Quarter horses.

PPFTA: Is there a single horse in your career that stands out?
Julio: Yes, Marquesa de Besilu. She was in a class by herself. She had brios, natural fino gait, beauty, conformation, and temperament – and though she lacked in size, she made up for it in heart.

PPFTA: Was there a particular win that was more emotionally gratifying?
Julio: Yes, my most emotionally gratifying win was with Marquesa de Besilu when we won the Fino Grand National.

PPFTA: Why?
Julio: It was the most emotionally gratifying win because of all the hard work I put into her during the year, and because she beat everybody, including stallions.

PPFTA: What trainers have been influential in your career?
Julio: The trainers that have been most influential in my career are my father, Papa Cunda, and mostly my brother, Juan Ramon.

PPFTA: What did winning Trainer of The Year mean to you?
Julio: Winning Trainer of the Year was an honor and a privilege.

PPFTA: What do you think makes a good trainer/client relationship?
Julio: You have to respect each other.

PPFTA: In addition to your training responsibilities, do you also work with A/O and/or youths riders?
Julio: Yes, I really enjoy working with A/O and youth riders; they are the future of the breed.

PPFTA: What is your most valuable piece of equipment?
Julio: My bosal is most important.

PPFTA: If you have experience in the international show ring, what are the major differences?
Julio: In some places, the lack of facilities, and also I don't care for the conference judging.

PPFTA: As a trainer, what do you consider your greatest strengths?
Julio: My greatest strengths are my open mindedness, knowledge, and my lack of fear.

PPFTA: Besides the horses, what is your favorite animal?
Julio: Dogs are my favorite after the horses.

PPFTA: Do you take an interest in, or follow any other breeds?
Julio: I always admire a good horse regardless of the breed.
